Now we are entering a period where people may begin arguing over reality itself.
That distinction sounds subtle at first, but it changes almost everything underneath it. For centuries, societies functioned because there was at least some baseline agreement about what objectively happened, even when people fiercely disagreed about why it happened or what it meant. Shared facts acted as the foundation beneath journalism, courts, science, education, governance, and even personal relationships. Reality itself functioned as common ground.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to destabilize that ground.
The public conversation around AI still frames this issue too narrowly. Most discussions focus on deepfakes, misinformation, or manipulated images circulating online. Those concerns are real, but they are only surface-level symptoms of something much larger. The deeper shift is that AI systems are making synthetic reality scalable. Images, videos, voices, documents, conversations, personalities, and even entire online identities can now be generated with increasing realism, speed, and volume.
The issue is no longer whether fake content can exist.
The issue is whether humans will retain confidence in their ability to verify reality at all.
That is a much more consequential problem.
In early 2024, AI-generated robocalls using a cloned version of President Joe Biden’s voice circulated ahead of the New Hampshire primary election, prompting investigations by regulators and renewed concerns about synthetic political manipulation. Around the same time, families reported receiving AI-generated voice calls mimicking loved ones asking for emergency financial help. These were not theoretical scenarios or speculative fears. They were real-world examples of synthetic media crossing directly into politics, crime, and ordinary human trust.
That matters because historically, evidence carried weight precisely because fabrication required significant effort, expertise, and resources. Creating convincing falsehoods at scale was difficult. Artificial intelligence changes that equation entirely. A single person can now generate photorealistic images, clone voices, fabricate video footage, simulate conversations, and produce persuasive synthetic media within minutes using publicly available tools.
And the systems are improving rapidly.
OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo, ElevenLabs voice synthesis, and increasingly sophisticated open-source image and video models are pushing synthetic media toward levels of realism that would have seemed implausible only a few years ago. The speed of advancement is part of what makes this difficult to emotionally process. The technology is evolving faster than society’s ability to establish stable norms around verification and trust.
This creates what may become one of the defining tensions of the AI era.
When fabrication becomes effortless, trust becomes fragile.
That fragility affects far more than social media. Journalism depends on verification. Courts depend on evidence. Democracies depend on public trust in information systems. Human relationships themselves depend on the assumption that what we hear, see, and remember corresponds in some meaningful way to reality. Because the ultimate consequence of synthetic media is not necessarily believing false things.
It is no longer believing anything with confidence at all.
That creates a society vulnerable to cynicism, tribal fragmentation, and institutional distrust. AI may simultaneously become both the source of synthetic reality and the only system capable of verifying reality at scale.
Humans are not equipped to authenticate millions of images, videos, and recordings continuously. Verification itself increasingly becomes computational. In response, major companies and institutions are already attempting to build systems designed to preserve provenance and authenticity. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, or C2PA, includes organizations such as Adobe, Microsoft, OpenAI, and others working on standards for tracking and verifying digital media origins.
Governments are responding as well. The European Union’s AI Act includes provisions targeting synthetic media transparency and disclosure requirements. Technology companies are exploring watermarking systems, provenance tracking, cryptographic signatures, and AI-driven fraud detection systems to help distinguish authentic media from manipulated content.
But even those solutions carry limitations.
Open-source systems may bypass safeguards entirely. Watermarks can potentially be removed or degraded. Verification systems themselves may become politicized or distrusted. And perhaps most importantly, once doubt enters public consciousness broadly enough, the psychological effect may persist even when verification tools exist.
That creates a strange paradox.
The more synthetic reality expands, the more society may depend on AI systems to determine what is real.
That shifts enormous power toward whoever controls those verification systems.
The implications extend beyond politics or misinformation alone. Human memory itself may begin changing under these conditions. Memory has always been imperfect, but historically it existed within relatively stable evidentiary environments. In a world saturated with synthetic media, memory becomes more vulnerable to manipulation, doubt, revision, and uncertainty. The line between documented reality and generated reality becomes harder to maintain psychologically over time.
Even personal relationships may change under this pressure.
What happens when plausible deniability becomes technologically trivial? What happens when anyone can fabricate conversations, images, or evidence convincingly enough to introduce doubt into ordinary human interactions? The issue is not whether every fabricated piece of media will succeed. The issue is that the existence of plausible fabrication weakens confidence itself.
That erosion accumulates socially.
At the same time, it would be simplistic to frame artificial intelligence solely as a destructive force here. AI may also become one of humanity’s most powerful tools for detecting fraud, identifying manipulation, authenticating provenance, and preserving evidentiary trust. The same systems capable of generating synthetic media may ultimately become essential for defending against it.
That duality is important.
Artificial intelligence is not inherently creating a post-truth society on its own. Human incentives, institutions, governance structures, media ecosystems, and public behavior all shape how these technologies evolve. AI amplifies both constructive and destructive capacities simultaneously. The danger lies less in the technology itself than in how rapidly surrounding social systems may struggle to adapt.
